Congratulations to the following RMCCers who successfully completed the 2021
Colorado Triple Crown. This year's series had a limited number of participants,
largely due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and because of adverse weather, which resulted in the cancellation of two of this season's new Triple Crown events, the Rampart Epic and Vail River Road Double Century. This year's finishers include:
Mark Lowe
David Nelson*
Ricardo Stephen
Corinne Warren
*At 68 years young, David Nelson is the oldest club member to ever complete the Colorado Triple Crown. Dave completed this year's series after recovering from a very bad auto vs bicycle crash in 2020, which makes his accomplishment even more impressive. Congratulations, Dave!

Congratulations to the following riders who have successfully completed the 2020 Corona, "do-it-yourself" version of the Colorado Triple Crown series. To successfully complete the series, participants had to complete 3 of the Triple Crown courses without support. These courses are extremely challenging with support, so extra kudos to those RMCC members who have completed this year's series without any help. This year's finishers are:
Graham Barnes
Paul Foley*
Pascal Ledru*
Andy Lapkass (single speed)
Mark Lowe
Tom Miller
David Nelson**
Rich Rodgers
Michael Turek
Vernon Smith
Corinne Warren
*First Colorado Triple Crown
**Oldest Colorado Triple Crown Finisher, 67 years old. Congratulations, Dave!
2020 has obviously not been the year that any of us had hoped it would be. The Coronavirus pandemic has adversely affected everything that we consider "normal" in our lives. This includes little things like simply riding our bikes to more extravagant social bike events, including races and organized century rides.

The events conducted by the RMCC, including the Colorado Triple Crown, have also been adversely affected by the pandemic. In an attempt to remain compliant with the public health recommendations of "social distancing" and "staying at home," we canceled the first four events of this year's Colorado Triple Crown series, including AntiEpic Gravel Grinder, the Colorado Mesa Double Century, the Denver to Aspen Classic, and the Colorado Classic Double Century. At first glance, this makes it impossible for any rider to complete three of the events in year's series. There is only one event left on this season's calendar: Colorado Tour de Moose Double Century. However, as social distancing restrictions are gradually lifted, we think that we have a fair and safe solution that will allow club members to complete this year's Colorado Triple Crown series. But it is going to involve some motivation and planning on your end!

To try to preserve the series for as many of you as possible, we are allowing RMCC members to create and ride their own virtual Colorado Triple Crown series for the remainder of this season. This has been approved by our club's insurance for this season.

Here are the steps to complete a virtual Colorado Triple Crown event:

1) Please have an active RMCC membership. This is non-negotiable.

2) Select a course to ride. See the extensive list below. As in previous years, RMCC members must complete 3 of the rides to complete the series.

3) Email Mark Lowe (mvlowe5@comcast.net) at least 1 week prior to your ride for pre-approval. Please include the names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers of every RMCC member who will be participating. Mark will provide you with additional details regarding the logistics of your ride. Please try to keep your group of riders small (< 5-6 riders) to remain compliant with public health guidelines.

4) You will be e-mailed a copy of our club's insurance waiver. Please have everyone who is participating in your ride sign the waiver and e-mail it back to Mark.

5) Personal support vehicles are allowed and encouraged for rider safety. But participants must complete the entire course on their own to receive credit for completing the course.

6) Study your course in advance to plan your self-support points.

7) Have a great ride!

8) Please post your completed ride to Strava or Ride with GPS to receive credit for completing your adventure.

9) Time limits:
A) Courses that have < 17,000 feet of climbing need to be completed in < 19 hours.
B) Courses with >17,000 feet of climbing need to be completed in < 22 hours.
C) 24 hour time limit for: Clear Creek Crusher, Golden Goliath Double Century (lowland and highland courses), Mt Evans - Pikes Peak Challenge (both directions), and Evergreen to Vail Double Century. These rides are very difficult!

We have an outstanding line up for 2020! Click the link below to check out the schedule:

2020 Colorado Triple Crown Schedule

Here are the details about the 2020 series:

We will have 5 official rides and 3 brevet-style rides for participants to choose from. Details about the 2020 events are listed on the right sidebar of this blog. As in previous years, participants must successfully complete 3 events to complete the series. To complete the series, participants can either complete 3 of the 5 official events OR complete 2 of the official events and 1 of the brevet-style events during 2020.

Next year marks the return of the Colorado Classic Double Century. After a massive 3 year paving project, Cottonwood Pass is finally paved and re-opened to cyclists, allowing us to place this epic event (which is perhaps the most difficult of the Colorado Triple Crown events due to the combination of length and the unpaved Kebler Pass) back on the 2020 Colorado Triple Crown calendar. We've managed to shave 7 miles off of the course by using Jack's Cabin turnoff (also unpaved) to connect US 50 to the south of Crested Butte to Taylor Canyon.

For the 2020 season, we will allow participants to complete 1 of 3 unsupported, brevet-style rides. Get ready for an ass-whooping! All of the brevet-style courses are extremely difficult. Participants can only complete 1 of these courses during 2020 for Colorado Triple Crown credit. And these are the only courses that participants can ride for Triple Crown credit, so please plan ahead! To complete one of these rides for Triple Crown credit, please e-mail Mark Lowe (mvlowe5@comast.net) at least 24 hours in advance. After completing the course, participants will need to upload their ride GPS data to either Ride with GPS or Strava to demonstrate proof of completing the course within the time limit AND provide picture documentation of their bikes at specific locations along the course (see below). The brevet style courses include:

Clear Creek Crusher: 203 miles, 23,000+ feet of climbing. Time limit: 23 hours. Clear Creek County's hardest climbs: Mt. Evans, Squaw Pass, Fall River Rd, Berthoud Pass, Loveland Pass. This course can be ridden after the new bridge that will connect the I-70 frontage road to Fall River Road is completed, sometime during 2020. Picture documentation required at Mt, Evans Summit, Squaw Pass, St Mary's Glacier, Berthoud Pass, Loveland Pass, and Guanella Pass.

Peak-to-Peak Double Century Challenge: 202 miles 24,000+ feet of climbing. Time limit: 23 hours. A point-to-point route from Golden to Manitou Springs, including Mt Evans and Pikes Peak. Simply put, this is the world's most difficult double century: two 14,000+ peaks! This course can also be ridden in reverse. Special attention must be paid to the time restrictions on Pikes Peak (uphill gates open at 9:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM). Recommended start time: between 11 PM and 1:00 AM. Picture documentation required at Mt Evans Summit and Pikes Peak Summit.

Colorado Death Ride: 225 miles, 16,500 feet of climbing. The Colorado Death Ride loop is one of our original Triple Crown courses. Participants can ride this amazing loop which encircles the San Juans in the counter-clockwise direction from Durango OR in the clockwise direction from Ridgway. Picture documentation required at Molas Pass, Red Mountain Pass, Dallas Divide, and Lizard Head Pass.

Registration for the 2020 series will open on March 1, 2020. Registration fees will range from $25 - $40 per event and will be non-refundable and non-transferrable. Please plan your schedule in advance.

As during previous seasons, RMCC membership ($25/year) is required to participate in the series.

For those club members who are planning to participate in next year's Colorado High Country 1200 km, we've left the entire month of July open.

In the unfortunate situation of terrible weather, wildfires, natural disasters, or road closures that make it impossible to complete an event on its scheduled day, that event can be ridden in brevet format (i.e., without RMCC support) on any day during 2020 for Colorado Triple Crown credit. Time limits will be lengthened by 1 hour for unsupported rides.

Volunteers: We need your help! We've had wonderful volunteer support over the years and we hope that this will continue during 2020. In order to prevent volunteer burnout, we are asking for new volunteers (i.e., individuals who did not volunteer during 2019). However, we will not turn away old volunteers. As during previous years, volunteers may pre- or post-ride the event that they are volunteering for, with or without personal support, for Triple Crown credit.

We're excited to announce that his year's Colorado Triple Crown events will included in the Planet Ultra Grand Slam Series. Planet Ultra is one of the nation's premier advocates for ultra cycling events, organizing several of the double centuries included in the California Triple Crown series as well as the spectacular Hoodoo 500. By including the Colorado events in the Planet Ultra series, we're hopeful that this will entice a few riders from California to attempt our challenging series!

And last but not least, special thanks to two-time Colorado Triple Crown finisher, Rich Rodgers, for all of his hard work for helping us redesign the Colorado Triple Crown kit, which is the "trophy kit" for those riders who successfully complete the series. After 11 years, our beloved Colorado Triple Crown kit was due for an overhaul. Thanks to Rich for coming up with a design that is "timeless" (i.e., there are no specific events or dates listed on this jersey) and a bit more visible in the upper torso, which will hopefully improve rider safety. These will be available for order in December 2019.

Say it ain't so!?!

We regretfully must cancel this year's Cycle to Saturn Double Century on June 15, 2019. This year's heavy snowfall and avalanches have buried the bike trail along I-70 by the Loveland Ski Resort and it will not be open in time for our event. Unfortunately, this bike trail is an integral part of our course and we cannot legally re-route the course onto Interstate 70, which parallels the bike trail.

In it's place, we will substitute the Cripple Creek Crippler on June 15, 2019, another Front Range course that is just as challenging as Cycle to Saturn.

For riders who are planning on riding the Cripple Creek Crippler course this summer in an unsupported brevet format, they will now be allowed to ride any of the remaining Colorado Triple Crown courses without support for Triple Crown credit. Riders will need to complete the course of their choosing within the respective time limit for that event. These courses include:

Colorado Classic Double Century (if Cottonwood Pass re-opens this summer as planned)

Colorado Death Ride

Colorado Mesa Double Century

Cycle to Saturn (once the I-70 bike trail re-opens)

Denver to Aspen (once the I-70 bike trail re-opens)

Joe Lookingbill Denver to Aspen course

Kebler Kamikaze Double Century

Here's a sneak peak at the preliminary 2019 Colorado Triple Crown schedule:

2019 Colorado Triple Crown Schedule

A few notes about the schedule:

There are 5 events on the 2019 schedule plus 1 brevet-style event (i.e., no RMCC support).

We've designated the Cripple Creek Crippler course as the brevet-style course. The Cripple Creek Crippler course can be ridden on any day during the 2019 season and is meant to help more riders complete the series. Riders need to e-mail me in advance to let me know that they intend on riding this course for Colorado Triple Crown credit. Although the RMCC will not be providing support for this course, riders who choose to complete this course can ride with a personal support vehicle that can meet them at checkpoints along the course. The time limit for completing this course is 20 hours (total elapsed time). After completing the course, riders will need to send me GPS data (via Ride with GPS or Strava) to prove that they have successfully completed the course within the 20-hour time limit.

To pique your interest, we will have one new event on the calendar for 2019: Colorado Tour de Moose. This new mixed terrain event is 205 miles long and includes 27 miles of well-maintained gravel roads. This ride starts and ends in Loveland, CO and climbs Old Fall River Road (unpaved) in Rocky Mountain National Pass, Willow Creek Pass, and Cameron Pass from the west, before making the long descent down the scenic Poudre Canyon. This event will have a rider cap of 24 participants.

As in 2018, we will also give Colorado Triple Crown credit for those riders who successfully complete the Death Ride Challenge on Sunday, June 9, 2019. This is a non-RMCC event and participants must complete the event within the official time limit for the event to receive Colorado Triple Crown credit.

Registration for this year's series will open on March 1, 2019. Registration fees will range from $20-$25 per event and will be non-transferrable and non-refundable. Please plan your schedule in advance. If we are not able to find volunteers/support vehicle drivers for an event, then that event will be free of charge. We will not charge a fee for an unsupported ride.

In the unfortunate situation of terrible weather, wildfires, other natural disasters, or road closures that makes it impossible to complete an event, that event can be ridden in brevet format (i.e, without RMCC support) on any day during 2019 for Colorado Triple Crown credit. Time limits will be lengthened by 1 hour for unsupported rides.

As in previous seasons, RMCC membership ($25/year) is required to participate in the series.

A few notes about volunteers:

We need your help. All of us who have completed this series agree that these rides work best with volunteer support. It is possible to complete all of these courses without support, but to truly ride them quickly and in a semi-competitive format, it must be done with support. I'm not going to lie. Volunteering is a BIG commitment. It does involve getting up well before the crack of dawn and sometimes not finishing until well after the sun sets. But it can be a rewarding experience too. We do our best to pay for mileage and personal expenses (food, motels if necessary) for volunteers during the event. Our goal is to make sure that volunteers are only giving up time, not money for supporting these rides.

We would like to have at least 1 volunteer per ride, but it is easier to support the rides with 2 volunteers per ride.

Volunteers can pre- or post-ride that event any time during 2019 to receive Colorado Triple Crown credit.

If we do not have volunteers for an event in 2019, then it will be ridden in brevet format (i.e., without support).

Please refer to the 2019 Colorado Triple Crown Schedule above to see which events still needs volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail:

Additional Notes:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">Moose time bonuses. We didn't name this event the Colorado Tour de Moose for nothing! Northern Colorado is home to a dense population of moose. In fact, it's almost guaranteed that you're going to encounter a Bullwinkle at some point in time while riding in this part of the state. Because of this, we will be offering a 15 minute time bonus if you successfully take a picture of a moose during this ride. These pictures must post to your Strava ride data to receive credit for your sighting! If you don't have a Strava account, it's time to get with the times and sign up!

Each moose picture = 15 minute time bonus. However, groups of moose only count for 1 moose sighting. Moose must be greater than 1 mile apart to get another time bonus. Max: 2 time bonuses.

Moose are moose. Deer, elk, horses, cows are not moose. Do not request time bonuses for animals that are not moose! If you do so, you will chastised and ridiculed at the conclusion of the ride!

Attempting to upload a picture of a moose from the internet will result in DQ. Please don't do this.

Congratulations to the following RMCC members who have successfully completed the 2018 Colorado Triple Crown. This year's series was a difficult series to complete. 3 of the 5 events included in this year's series (AntiEpic Gravel Grinder, Cycle to Saturn Double Century, and the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century) were mixed terrain events that included sections of dirt/gravel roads and the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder is a true gravel event with 90% dirt/gravel roads. Participants of the Mesa Double Century also experienced the unanticipated difficulty of a wildfire along I-70 in DeBeque Canyon during the evening prior to the event, which prevented several participants from making it to the start of the ride. This year's finishers include:
On Saturday, August 25, 2018, members of the Rocky Mountain Cycling Club ventured to Crested Butte, CO in the heart of the Colorado Rockies to tackle the newest Colorado Triple Crown adventure, the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century. The inspiration for the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century course came from the West Elk Bicycle Classic, which is one of Colorado's most beloved Gran Fondo cycling events (2012-2016, 2018). The West Elk Bicycle Classic is a point-to-point route that travels from Gunnison to Crested Butte, nearly encircling the West Elk Mountains in the center of the state. The crux of the West Elk course is the 30-mile, 4,100 foot climb up the rugged (i.e., unpaved), remote, but incredibly scenic Kebler Pass Road. After the 2016 West Elk Bicycle Classic, event organizers decided to pull the plug on their event, citing lack of volunteer support. With the expected demise of the West Elk Classic, RMCC stepped up to continue this classic course as a timed double century which included a double ascent of Kebler Pass, including Kebler Pass Road and the less-traveled, more rugged, and much steeper Ohio Pass Road. Early in 2018, after the RMCC had announced that it was riding the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century, the Peak-to-Peak Cycling Club offered to provide support for the West Elk Bicycle Classic, allowing organizers to resurrect the West Elk Bicycle Classic in it's original 130-mile format. In spite of the return of the West Elk Bicycle Classic, the RMCC decided to proceed with the new, extremely challenging Kebler Kamikaze Double Century.
Kebler Pass is one of Colorado's finest cycling passes, in spite of the fact that it is unpaved. It has been incorporated into numerous cycling events, including the multi-day Ride the Rockies cycling tour and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge (2011-2015). The Colorado Triple Crown has also used Kebler Pass previously in the Colorado Classic Double Century. This extremely difficult 243-mile double century was not included in the Colorado Triple Crown during the 2017 and 2018 cycling seasons due to massive paving project of the west side of Cottonwood Pass between Taylor Reservoir and Buena Vista, making it impossible to complete this epic cycling loop.

Cycling Kebler Pass can be a "Jeckle and Hyde" experience. Riders never know what sort of weather they are going to encounter! In dry and sunny conditions, Kebler Pass Road is a spectacular pass with stunning vistas as it winds its way through the second largest aspen grove on the planet! In stormy weather, however, riding over Kebler Pass can be a cold, muddy, and extremely mentally challenging experience. This was the case during the 2016 Colorado Classic Double Century! On a day when weather forecasters had predicted a "0% chance of rain," strong thunderstorms blossomed over the West Elk Mountains and the skies opened up, turning Kebler Pass Road into a muddy nightmare for many participants! For many riders who could recall this demoralizing experience, the mere thought of riding a double century that included a daredevil double ascent of Kebler Pass, without the guarantee of immaculate weather, was truly a "kamikaze" experience!

Kebler Kamikaze Double Century participants can breathe a sigh of relief as they descend down Kebler Pass into Crested Butte, especially after the second descent!

13 RMCCers accepted the challenge to ride the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century, with its double ascent of Kebler Pass! Participants had beautiful, cool, and sunny weather to start the day. But once mother nature figured out what we were up to, she decided to unleash a few afternoon and evening rain showers, which dampened the spirits of participants. Several riders decided to stop their ride and DNF after passing through Crested Butte for the first time, fearing that the second ascent of Kebler Pass via Ohio Pass Road would be a dreadful experience. In the end, all participants had the opportunity to experience the beautiful West Elk Scenic Byway, one of Colorado's finest cycling loops! Congratulations to all of this year's participants!
On Saturday, June 30, 2018, 18 brave-hearted members of the RMCC accepted the challenge to ride the formidable Cycle to Saturn Double Century. With nearly 20,000 feet of climbing and an average altitude of nearly 9,000 feet, Cycle to Saturn is arguably one the world's most challenging double centuries. Inspired by the professional Saturn Cycling Classic of the early 1990s, the double century event follows a similar course to the original race course used by the professionals. Whereas the Saturn Cycling Classic started in Boulder and initially climbed Coal Creek Canyon, the current Cycle to Saturn double century course first climbs the lighter-trafficked Golden Gate Canyon. From the high point of Golden Gate Canyon, however, the two courses are identical, climbing over the intimidating gravel (and rocky) Oh My God Road, Guanella Pass (which is now completely paved, a huge improvement compared to the '90s when the southern descent was completely unpaved and many pro riders opted to descend the pass on mountain bikes), Kenosha Pass, and Hoosier Pass before dropping into the mountain resort town of Breckenridge. The Cycle to Saturn Double Century then continues on a challenging return route to Golden via the breath-taking, nearly 12,000 foot Loveland Pass before eventually dropping back into Golden. In spite of the forecast for thunderstorms, the thundershowers never materialized and riders had smooth sailing for the entire day. 18 riders started this year's event and 14 finished. Congratulations to all the riders who attempted this extremely intimidating double century!

Sometimes, the unimaginable happens...

Who would have imagined that on May 25, 2018, the evening before the Colorado Mesa Double Century, a semi-truck would explode in the James M. Robb Colorado River State Park along I-70 in De Beque Canyon, sparking a raging wild fire that would torch the state park and close I-70 in both directions? The unimaginable Memorial Day weekend wild fire, which stranded several participants in De Beque Canyon to the east of the fire, closed the short section of I-70 through De Beque Canyon that participants of the Colorado Mesa Double Century had to ride through the next morning to reach the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, the first major climb of the event.

With the entire event in limbo and without knowing when the fire would be contained, event volunteers made a late night decision with less than six hours before the start of the event to postpone the ride and open it to participants as an open, unsupported course when I-70 reopened, most likely on Sunday. Unbelievably, fire fighters were able to completely control the blaze, which had scorched 170 acres, and reopen I-70 in both directions shortly after midnight, less than two hours after the decision had been made to postpone the event.

With I-70 now open, many participants decided to head out as originally planned on Saturday morning in quasi-brevet (i.e., semi-supported) format. Event organizers scrambled to provide some support at key locations on the course (Colbran, Grand Mesa, and Kannah Creek), which was a good thing as temperatures soared to 97 degrees to the south of Grand Junction, which is unusually warm for the Western Slope during the month of May. However, participants were left to fend for themselves in Cedaredge, Delta, and on the south side of Grand Junction by self-supporting at convenience stores along the course.

In spite of the chaotic start to the event, 10 of 15 preregistered riders ventured out onto the Colorado Mesa Double Century course on Saturday. And two more riders rode the course entirely without support on Sunday! Kudos to all of this year's participants for keeping a positive attitude when the unimaginable occurred and all of our plans went up in a puff of smoke!

Pikes Peak on an amazing weather day during the 2018 AntiEpic Gravel Grinder

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, members of the RMCC ventured to Monument, CO to tackle the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder, the RMCC's only true gravel event. The AntiEpic Gravel Grinder consists of 2 events: the mighty AntiEpic Gravel Grinder Double Century (i.e, 206-mile long course), which is one of the more intimidating events on the RMCC Challenge Series calendar, and the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder Mini-Epic (i.e., short course), a 76-mile course that includes 5,600 feet of climbing in the form of short, but steep rollers. The weather was about as anti-epic as it gets, which always a good thing for riders attempting to complete an epic adventure on the bike! Participants were blessed with bright, sunny skies, comfortably temperatures, and light winds for the entire day! And perhaps for the first time in the history of the entire universe, long-course riders were blessed with tail winds (or light cross winds) in nearly every direction! Due to an unusually dry winter, the dirt and gravel roads to the east of Castle Rock and Monument were especially rugged this winter, strewn with miles of sand and wash board; however, during the week prior to the event, the area received nearly 2-3 inches of rain, muting the unusually rugged roads and smoothing out the course for this year's participants. The favorable weather conditions and the fast-rolling roads laid the foundation for the fastest times that we have ever witnessed on this course! Congratulations to all of this year's participants!

22 long-course ride starters, including 12 Triple Crown rookies(!), 19 official finishers (86% finishing rate) successfully completed the long course in less than 22 hours (>9.4 m.p.h.), 3 DNFs. Of the riders who started, 20 men, 2 women.

Congratulations to Nicholas Kulesa, who posted a blistering time of 12 hours, 27 minutes. Due to a support mishap, Nicholas was given a 14 minute time credit, so his official finishing time is 12 hours, 13 minutes (16.9 mph)...not too shabby his first double century, and a gravel double century at that!

Congratulations to Oksana Kovalenko, who posted the fastest women's time of the day in 16 hours, 28 minutes (12.5 m.p.h.). Oksana and Laura Furey, who finished later in the day, are the only two women to have ever finished the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder long-course! Congratulations to both of you!

1. 2018 Colorado Triple Crown: Mixed terrain adventures!
In 2018 Colorado Triple Crown will feature a combination of rides that we've never used before. If I had to pick a theme for 2018, it would be "mixed terrain." Three of the five events on the 2018 Triple Crown calendar include sections of unpaved roads and the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder is about 90% unpaved. These three events will also comprise the "stage race" for 2018. The idea of mixed terrain rides may be intimidating to many road riders, but consider this an opportunity to improve your repertoire of bike skills while tacking new terrain and adventures! This year's series definitely benefits the most "well-rounded" road riders!

We do have one new twist for 2018: the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century!
I have long had a fascination with Kebler Pass, which is one of my favorite passes in the state! We've used Kebler Pass previously in the Colorado Classic Double Century, but with Cottonwood Pass still under construction, we simply cannot complete this course. I have also had a fascination with the West Elk Bicycle Classic, which was one of the best gran fondos in the state and one of my favorite non-RMCC events in this state. In 2017, however, Western State University in Gunnison decided to "pull the plug" on their gran fondo for unclear reasons, leaving behind one of the best loop courses in the entire state. Well, this is were we step in! Now RMCCers will have the opportunity to experience this very fine cycling loop and one of the best climbing passes in Colorado!

In 2018, we are taking another year hiatus from the Colorado High Country Double Century (i.e., Boulder to Steamboat Springs) and the Cripple Creek Crippler. We are also taking a year off from the Denver to Aspen Classic, Tim Kalisch Memorial Grand Loop, and Colorado Death Ride. As previously mentioned, the Colorado Classic Double Century will remain on hold while the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) continues a massive paving project on the west side of Cottonwood Pass.

To sum things up, here's the 2018 Colorado Triple Crown calendar:

May 5, 2018: AntiEpic Gravel Grinder, Monument, CO*

For the Challenge Series Short-Course Events, we will once again plan to keep thing simple in 2018:

April 7 2018: Foothills Climbfest, Littleton, CO

May 5, 2018: AntiEpic Gravel Grinder Short Course: For those riders who want a shorter (but timed) version of a 200 mile gravel road sufferfest.

2. Qualification
We will continue to the same pre-qualification recommendations that we've used for the last two seasons. I believe these recommendations give more riders from outside the RMCC access to the series.

Participants who have not met the pre-qualification requirements listed below can still register and participate, but they will need to ride with a personal support vehicle until they can demonstrate that they can safely complete at least one of the Colorado Triple Crown events within its designated time limit. As in previous seasons, RMCC membership is required to participate!

To pre-qualify, prospective participants must complete one of the following events in the previous 24 months:

Any Colorado Triple Crown event

Any mountainous double century (or longer) event in another part of the country (time required for verification)

One of the RMCC-sponsored 300 km brevets in less than 14 hours (16.5 hours for the Cripple Creek 300 km brevet)

Successful completion of another extreme endurance event of at least 12 hours duration:

Ironman Triathlon < 14 hours (time required for verification)

50+ mile mountainous running ultra-marathon < 12 hours

For 2018, we will continue to make an exception to the pre-qualification requirements for the AntiEpic Gravel Grinder. Any rider who is up for the challenge can sign up; however, 1) Active RMCC membership is still be required to participate. This is for insurance reasons. 2) There will be an additional cost-recovery fee to help us cover the expenses for hosting the event. 3) All riders who cannot complete the event will need to make arrangements to have someone pick them up. RMCC does not provide transportation for riders who cannot successfully complete this ride. Please keep in mind that an "I can do it!" attitude is fantastic, but it may not be adequate to successfully complete this event. Please be forewarned and come prepared!

Please e-mail me if you have questions about pre-qualification!

4. Volunteers

We are 100% dependent on volunteer support!!!
For 2018, we are continuing to ask (i.e., beg) for volunteer help! I'm not going to lie! Volunteering for one of these events is a long day...usually between 12-20+ hours! And it usually involves getting up well before dawn. But volunteering can be quite a bit of fun too! For 2018, we will continue to provide the following incentives to volunteer:

If a rider volunteers for an event, he/she can 1) ride that event (as a volunteer pre- or post-ride) any time during that cycling season for Triple Crown credit AND 2) Sign up for another Triple crown event during that season for free! You're essentially getting two events for free!

Riders who volunteer for an event can pre-ride or post-ride that event anytime during 2018 to receive official Colorado Triple Crown credit. This is the only situation that we will allow participants to pre- or post-ride and receive credit for completing the event.

Volunteers who provide SAG/driving support for the event will be reimbursed for their mileage accrued during the event (at the current Federal rate). We will also reimburse for volunteer motels and food/snack purchases accrued during the event.

Notes:

If we are unable to secure volunteers for an event, the event will still be contested in brevet format (i.e., without support). Please be aware of this! If this situation does occur, participants can expect to receive a partial refund for that event.

3. Registration

Fees. Registration fees will be similar for 2018: $50 - $75 per event. Please keep in mind that these are cost recovery fees for running these events. These fees barely cover our expenses for supporting these rides. We do not turn a profit for running these events! And if we do have funds left over at the end of the season, we will apply these funds toward the cost of the Colorado Triple Crown kits for those riders who successfully complete the series.

Registration will open on March 1, 2018!

Withdrawal. For those individuals who have registered for an event and need to withdraw, they can do so up to 2 weeks prior to the date of the event for a full refund (minus our fees for using PayPal and Eventzilla). Within 2 weeks, refunds will not be granted.

Transfers. Registration fees are NOT be transferrable between events less than 2 weeks prior to the date of the event. So please plan ahead!

Whereas these other events cross Kebler Pass once from west to east, the Kebler Kamikaze Double Century, in true kamikaze fashion, dares to summit Kebler Pass twice, once via Kebler Pass Road and the second time via the lesser known (but equally spectacular) Ohio Pass Road. The Kebler Kamikaze Double Century has the potential for glory or heartbreak! Will you test your cycling fortitude.....and luck???

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">Kebler Pass, Hors categorie. <span style="font-family: "times new roman";"> Kebler Pass is a bohemeth, unpaved climb, ascending just under 5,000 feet as it winds its way through the West Elk Mountains from Paonia to Crested Butte. Many of the "flatter" sections of Kebler Pass Road mid-way into the climb are enshrouded in one of the largest aspen groves on the planet.
